Mickey who?
“You must like animals a lot!” is the type of response I would often get whenever I’m introduced as a vet to people at any social events. I would usually nod in agreement with an awkward smile on my face.
Does a doctor like human beings? Does an accountant like accounts? Honestly, I’m uncertain if I’m a vet because I like animals. Hence, I would usually leave the conversation as it is and hope that they won’t mention anything about my love for animals.
Today, I happened to recall an incident in kindergarten more than 2 decades ago. I happily drew my grandparents’ pug, Mickey, when I was asked to illustrate the meaning of “on the table”.
I got my preposition wrong and put Mickey under the table instead. A few of my classmates got it wrong as well, because I drew the same dog for them. Mickey played a huge part in my childhood and we had a love-hate kind of relationship.
In retrospect, my sister and I have grown up with many pets. Other than Mickey, we had Hammy the hamster, Goldie the goldfish, Pitzy the Terrapin and so many more. It is unfathomable how life would be without them. I’m not a vet because I like animals. Rather, I happened to be a vet that enjoys spending time with her patients. That definitely makes my job much easier!
